Tamborine Mountain From Brisbane: Rainforest Tour, Hop-On Hop-Off or Winery Day?

7 min read

A small waterfall dropping through a rock arch into a green pool in rainforest

Tamborine Mountain is the hinterland day out closest to Brisbane: Visit Brisbane calls it only an hour’s drive away. The listings turn it into five very different days, and the difference is mostly how much of the day you spend on a bus and whether anyone chooses your stops for you.

The two guided rainforest days

Both are long. The small-group tour lasts 8 hours, takes up to 11 guests and leaves from Ann Street, stop 12, at City Hall. Its page names a 1.5-hour drive to Springbrook National Park, where you walk to the Natural Bridge for about 45 minutes, then an hour’s drive to Mount Tamborine for the Gallery Walk shops, the man-made glow worm cave at Cedar Creek Estate and the Rainforest Skywalk. Entry to the national parks, the glow worm attraction and the Skywalk is listed in the price, along with a snack and water. The description also mentions a brief Subway lunch, and a Subway sub, drink and cookie appear in the same list as the entry tickets; ask the operator whether lunch is in the price. The page also lists, as unsuitable, people with a low level of fitness, altitude sickness or motion sickness, and people over 70, and says you need to manage stairs and an incline back up from the Natural Bridge.

The ten-hour tour takes up to 21 people from 222 Margaret Street. It covers the Curtis Falls walk, a lookout over the valley, the Cedar Creek glow worm caves, Gallery Walk, the Natural Bridge at Springbrook and a stop at Hinze Dam on the way back. Park entry and the glow worm tour are included, with a guide. Lunch is not: the page leaves you time to buy it at a café on Gallery Walk or eat a packed meal. Children under 5, people with mobility impairments and people with a low level of fitness are listed as unsuitable, and the page says buses cannot carry strollers, wheelchairs or mobility devices.

The Natural Bridge is in both, so it does not decide between them. The small-group tour adds the Skywalk and takes 11 guests rather than 21; the ten-hour tour adds Curtis Falls, the hang-glider lookout and Hinze Dam. If the glow worms are the point, note that both show them by day in a purpose-built cave, not in the wild.

The hop-on hop-off days

The hop-on hop-off day pass is transport only. The page gives a pickup from Brisbane city at 8:30 am, departure from the mountain at 3:30 pm and a return at about 5:00 pm. Attraction entry, food and tastings are paid on the spot. A green line serves the nature stops, such as Curtis Falls and the Skywalk, and a red line the wineries, breweries and distilleries. The operator says most guests manage three or four stops.

The second hop-on hop-off is an 8-hour day that adds a pre-booked Rainforest Skywalk time. The guided tour’s page describes the Skywalk as a 1.5 km walk with 300 metres of steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever 30 metres above the creek. The pass lists free time on the mountain from about 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, and says the glow worm caves and other venues’ entry fees are not included. The page marks it wheelchair accessible; ask the operator whether that covers the Skywalk walkways and the hop-on hop-off loop.

The winery day

The winery tour is 6 hours for up to 13 people, with pickup from four city locations, three winery tastings and a two-course lunch. Cheese at one winery is optional and at your own expense. People under 17 are listed as unsuitable. It is the only one of the five where the tasting is the point.

Which to choose

For a first visit with no particular interest, the small-group rainforest tour is the most complete, as long as the stairs are within your range. The hop-on hop-off passes suit people who want to choose their own stops, and the price is only the bus, so add what you intend to pay for on the mountain. The winery day is for adults.

Tamborine Mountain is also easy to reach by car, if you would rather set your own pace; you can compare hire cars for Brisbane first. The hinterland also includes tours to waterfalls and rainforest beyond Tamborine: see the rainforest tours from Brisbane, 9 in all from €73.36. If you drive, Queensland Parks warns that the car park at Cedar Creek fills quickly at weekends and on public holidays and that parking along Cedar Creek Falls Road is not permitted (park alert, valid until 3 May 2027).
